The Snapdragon 820 MSM8996 is a chipset which was released in 2015 and was to be used for high-end mobile phones which could use the multi-core processors which had also been released. The Snapdragon 820 MSM8996 comes in four different versions and these are listed at the bottom of the page.
The chipset comes with an instruction set of ARMv8-A (A32, A64). As you will note that there is a 64bit option. One can only assume that there is a move to 64bit as mobile phone become more powerful and the software and its abilities improve with the hardware. One day you might only need a smartphone to manage your business instead of a computer, fax machine and answering machine. The processor is usually a 4x Qualcomm Kyro processor. These usually have a clock speed of up to 1.8 GHz. Now added to this is faster LPDDR4 SDRAM. The processor also come with 1,536 Kbyte L2 cache and a very powerful GPU being the Qualcomm Adreno 530 GPU which runs at 624 MHz.
